What is Conscious Living

Today I would like to talk about what it means to live a conscious life in my own opinion. Maybe it’s not the ideal for a lot of people, but to be honest, sometimes I feel a little bit overwhelmed because it’s impossible to be perfect. So, what I do is what makes me feel good for now and I’ll keep learning day by day to be the best version of myself.

What does it mean to live consciously?

For many people, hearing the term ‘conscious living’ brings up images of being vegan or maybe what we all well-know as a hippie. However, this is a total misconception. Anyone can practice living consciously. And it’s not some deeply mystical or necessarily spiritual practice.

In simple words, living consciously is about waking up. It’s about being conscious of what you consume and of the effect it has on you, the environment and other human beings. In every single aspect of your life.

Conscious living is about making conscious decisions, not just taking conventional wisdom at face value.

Conscious living is about looking deeply into everything that you do.

For example, you don’t stop eating meat just because other people tell you to. Not because it’s trendy right now on YouTube or Instagram. You stop eating meat or less meat because you have done your research and look into why you should eat more vegetables. What is behind factory farming. The industry behind meat and dairy. And whatever is your decision, it’s your decision, no one else’s.

There are many levels to explore. We are living in a world where something like a cuppa in the comfort of your couch is insignificant. We think that is insignificant. Especially, during this isolation, I’ve seen a lot of people have stopped posting content on social media because they don’t have “anything” to share.

Or for example, something that made a big impression on me was that even with phone calls with my family and friends, conversations do not come up because they believe that what they have been doing during the day is not special. And this is a reality. We stop valuing that just waking up every day is special.

And living consciously is that. About being aware of every aspect of your life and giving it considered thought.

Why should you live consciously?

This is not something that comes overnight, but I believe that practising a lifestyle of living consciously can make us happier. You will pay more attention to how you treat your body. You will learn how to value your time and how to say no. You will pay more attention to the world around you. You will get more interested in helping others and the planet. And believe me, practising conscious living can help you realize your passions and desires, set goals and what is important to you.

Changing your lifestyle takes time and effort. It’s a process. You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to be vegan, minimalist, zero waste and whatever else to carry out a conscious life. This is just an amazing way to understand and connect with yourself, the environment and the people you love.
